Mourinho feels a deal for the Juventus midfielder could yet be done in this window and talks with Everton have begun after defender's request to go. Chelsea believe they can crown the biggest spending spree in British football by signing Paul Pogba AND John Stones in the next few days.
Jose Mourinho will make a fresh bid to land £70 million-rated Juventus superstar Pogba before Tuesday’s 6pm transfer deadline.
The Premier League champions have already begun talks with Everton over a £34 million deal for defender Stones, despite the Toffees' public insistence
that he is not for sale.
Chelsea hope to complete a deal by the weekend and aim to try again for Pogba after their failed bid last week.
Signing both men would take their summer spending to £159m, with teenagers Danilo Pantic and Nathan plus Asmir Begovic, Abdul Baba Rahman and Pedro already coming through the door.
Mourinho has convinced Blues owner Roman Abramovich to spend big on strengthening his side after their slow start to the season, and believes 22-year-old France midfielder Pogba is a deal that could yet be done in this window.
Chelsea’s spending would eclipse the impressive recruitment at Manchester City, who have signed £49m winger Raheem Sterling, £32m defender Nicolas Otamendi, £8m midfielder Fabian Delph and have £57m-rated Kevin De Bruyne in their sights.
Last summer, Manchester United parted with £150m, including a British record £59.6m on Angel di Maria, as they rebuilt their squad to for an ultimately successful attempt to return to the top four.
Mourinho is ready to offer Pogba a £300,000-a-week contract — and has already said this summer the player would improve any side in the world.
Speaking during Chelsea’s pre-season tour of America, Mourinho said: “Pogba is not to put pressure on people. Pogba is one of the top players in the world. Pogba goes to any team and improves that team automatically.
“If he stays at Juventus, Juventus will be very strong again. If he goes somewhere else, he will improve immediately a team.”
Pogba’s capture would see him play alongside Nemanja Matic in front of the back four, with playmaker Cesc Fabregas ahead of them.
Juve have already taken £23.3m flop Juan Cuadrado on loan from Chelsea this summer, but the Londoners maintain Willian - another player in whom the Serie A side are interested, will not leave.
The representatives of Oscar, a third Chelsea midfielder that Juve were keen on, insist he will not leave the club this summer under any circumstances.
The champions have spent £21.7m on Augsburg left-back Abdul Baba Rahman and £21m on Barcelona’s Pedro during this window, with the winger scoring on his debut at West Brom on Sunday. They handed another £8m to Stoke for goalkeeper Begovic.
Victor Moses is set to follow Cuadrado out of the exit door before the deadline.
West Ham lead the chase, having offered £6m, and Tottenham are also interested but Chelsea want £10m for the former Crystal Palace and Wigan winger.
Stones handed in a transfer request on Tuesday.
Following Wednesday night's League Cup win at Barnsley - in which the 21-year-old played against his former club - Everton boss Roberto Martinez stated again that Stones is not for sale.
The England international has told the Toffees he wants to join Chelsea after seeing bids of £20m, £26m and £30m from Stamford Bridge turned down.
