Noisy Churches Shut Down In Nigeria

People in Church

Authorities in the Nigerian city of Lagos have shut down numerous churches due to being too noisy.  The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency took the step after receiving several complaints from frustrated residents.

“On my phone alone, I get 20 SMS on a daily basis,” said Adebola Shabi, head of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, according to the New Telegraph.

So the agency closed about 22 churches within the city based on the complaints.According to Shabi, they had already closed down 33 churches, making a total of 55 being closed down due to noise.
“With the enforcement today, we would have sealed about 55 premises because the last enforcement we carried out, we shut 33 premises,” Shabi told reporters.

“I gave approval for closure of 22 premises today, making 55.”
If a church is to be reopened, they would have to pay a fine of at least 50,000 naira ($250).
Whilst laudable, I don’t how asking wealthy churches to pay a fine to be reopened solves the problem.
