ONE of the cars destroyed in yesterday’s Shoreham air crash was a Daimler limo whose chauffeur had been driving to pick up a bride on her wedding day.
The classic car’s roof was ripped off and the driver was last night feared to be among those killed.
Devastated Jay Sherwin, a colleague at wedding specialists Chariot Chauffeurs, said: “I can confirm that it is one of our cars but at this stage I do not know what happened to the driver.
“I am waiting to hear from his wife and the police.
“All I will tell you is that he is a lovely guy and has worked for the company for 20 years. He was on his way to pick up a bride just along the road from Shoreham.
“I had a call from the couple to say that the car didn’t show up.
“I tried to get in touch with the driver but I couldn’t. We don’t know what has happened.”
The black and cream Daimler was due to collect the bride from her home and take her to the wedding at Goring-by-Sea, about eight miles from Shoreham.
One wedding guest told yesterday of her horror at hearing the wedding car had been destroyed by the falling Hawker Hunter jet.
Sarah Winton, 21, tweeted: “My stepdad’s sister’s hire car who was picking her up for her wedding was hit by the plane today. So sad.
“He never turned up to pick her up and the car is in the pictures of the debris. He probably didn’t make it. So sad about the air show.”
The Daimler was one of at least eight cars destroyed. A Vauxhall Corsa was also wrecked.
Witnesses to the crash said they did not think the drivers of either car could have survived.
The limo from Lewes firm Chariot Chauffeurs was a Daimler Limousine DS420.
It seats up to seven people — but only the driver was thought to be in the vehicle at the time of the crash. The powerful Daimlers are used extensively as official state cars worldwide. The model featured in the 1997 James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies.
