Wayne Rooney ends drought against Sunderland as Manchester United go top

Manchester United’s goalscorers celebrate after Memphis Depay’s opener.

Manchester United will end the current Premier League round top for the first time since Six Alex Ferguson left the team as champions in May 2013 following this stroll of a victory.
United have led the competition three times since Ferguson retired, but only due to playing before other sides and were subsequently overtaken. Now, Louis van Gaal’s team will spend at least a week as the leaders and as Wayne Rooney ended his league drought on 999 minutes with United’s second this was a satisfying day all round.

Goals from Memphis Depay, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata saw United to a 3-0 win over Sunderland, which means, quite incredibly, that they will be top of the league at the end of a game-week for the first time since Fergie left the club.

Incredible stat shows Man United are finally getting over Fergie under LVG

Much of the talk from Van Gaal recently has been about how he wants to leave a legacy of young players for his successor, and with the likes of Memphis and Anthony Martial shining at Old Trafford at the moment, his plans appear to be coming together.

United fans were singing ‘We’re top of the league’ during the second-half, and given that it’s been 110 weeks since they’ve been able to sing that, you can’t really blame them…Say it quietly, but Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United side are finally emerging from Sir Alex Ferguson’s shadow.
