Charlie Sheen talks to the Today Show and announces he is HIV positive


Charlie Sheen has announced he was diagnosed HIV positive four years ago in an emotional TV interview. The Hollywood actor, who initially thought had a brain tumour, told America’s Today programme: “It’s a hard three letters to absorb." Sheen, who revealed he had spent 'millions' buying people’s silence, said he does not know how he contracted the virus.


He took part in a sit-down interview with Matt Lauer, at 7am local time in New York (noon in the UK), after a US publication yesterday revealed the details.  Sheen admits he had spent a day with a prostitute who went into his bathroom and took a picture of his HIV medication and threatened to extort him. Sheen refuses to reveal how many people he has paid to keep his secret.

Sheen told how after learning he had HIV his life spiralled out of control.
He said: “I was depressed by the condition I was in. I was doing a lot of drugs. I was drinking want too much. I was making really bad decisions. That part I own 100 per cent.”

But he says: “That’s money you’ve taken from my kids”. Sheen says he has come forward to stop barrage of rumours.

He reveals he was diagnosed four years go and initially thought I had a brain tumour.

“It’s a hard three letters to absorb.”

The actor says he is looking forward to doing a show again. Despite his condition, he says he is “still the best guy for the job”.

Sheen: "I'm going to ride this wave of support" Sheen says he will not become the “poster man” for HIV but he will not shy away from his responsibilities.

Yes, but not for contamination. Just to do with threats to reveal condition.

Individuals who are being properly treated have an extremely low risk of passing on the virus.
